When I think of 1-inch-curls I think of Taylor Swift. Luckily, her curls are simple to achieve, even with fine hair. I recommend using a 1-inch-curling rod to get the look. (I use the Conair Infinity Rod and it runs for $25-30 at drug stores)

  1. Start off by using a heat protectant throughout your hair to protect from any damage.
  2. Next, spray some moose into your palms.
  3. Take the moose and massage it into your roots to add volume and to make the curls hold better. This is an important step for girls with fine hair because without having anything to hold them together, curls will easily fall out.
  4. Part your hair where it naturally parts (mine is right down the middle) and clip up one half to get it out of the way.
  5. Take the half that is down and clip up the top section. To do this, run your finger just above your ear and draw it all the way to the back of your head. Take this portion of hair and clip it over to the other side so you can start with just curling the bottom. By curling both the top and bottom portions separately, as appose to doing them together, we will have a full head of curls for a really complete look.
  6. Now we begin curling! Take 1-2 inch sections of hair at a time and wrap them around the barrel. For right handed girls (lefties, do the opposite) – when curling the right side of your head, you will hold the barrel downwards on the right side of your body and you will use your left hand to wrap the section of hair around the barrel. You want the curls to flow away from your face, so for the right side, you should start by wrapping the section above the curling rod, clockwise, around the back. Hold the hair in place for 5-8 seconds and then let go of the tip and catch the curl in your hand. Hold the curl for an additional 2-3 seconds so that it cools down and sets in its shape, as appose to becoming straighter.
  7. Continue curling the same way to the entire bottom section and then the top, leaving your front pieces of hair aside.
  8. When you get to the front portions of your hair, separate them as they naturally do. We want to curl these a little more naturally and loosely since these are the strands that will frame our face. To do this, wrap the curl a little more loosely around the rod and stretch the strand amongst the length of the rod. We want the curl to be looser so the hair should spiral around the rod in the most lengthy way possible – meaning we want each spiral to be far away from the previous one – taking up the entire length of the rod.
  9. Repeat the same steps to separate the hair on the other side. However, note that the rod will have to be handled differently. For right handed girls (again, lefties, do the opposite) – when curling the left side of you head, hold the rod with your right hand and bring it across the back of your neck, pointing it downwards. Use your left hand to wrap a 1-2 inch section around the barrel. To ensure the curls are flowing away from your face, take the section above the rod and move it behind in a counter-clockwise direction. Again, be sure to catch the curls in your hand after releasing them from the rod, and curl the front pieces more loosely so they flow better.
  10. Once you have a full head of curls, spray all over with hairspray to set them in place. Try adding a headband or clipping back the hair to style it even more and enjoy rocking your 1-inch curls!

My hair is absolutely impossible to curl. I have tried every method, every product, and every tool and each time it’s a total fail. However, I have recently discovered something that actually does the job — curling rods.

The only difference between a curling rod and a curling iron is that the curling rod does not have a clamp. Therefore, to get the perfect curl, you have to wrap your hair around the iron as appose to clamping it underneath. I use the Remington curling iron — its super cute (and pale pink!) and I like it because its larger in width than the typical curling rod so it makes really voluminous curls.

  1. Start off with semi-dirty hair – curls last longer in hair that has not been recently washed. Take a mousse product (I used Aussie’s Catch the Wave mousse) and scrunch your hair with it to add some texture and loose volume.
  2. Add a heat protectant all over your hair and comb it through– I used TRESemmé heat protectant. This minimizes the amount of damage that direct heat can do to your hair.
  3. Part your hair as your normally do and clip up half to get it out of the way. Take the other half and the pointed end of a teasing comb to part hair at the tip of your ear, separating your hair into a top and bottom layer for curling. Twist the top portion and clip it out of your way. Keep any bangs or front pieces together as appose to separating them into top and bottom sections.
  4. Take the remaining bottom portion and with one inch sections, wrap the hair around the curling rod. Hold the hair around the rod for 5-8 seconds and when you release it from the rod, catch it in your hand and hold the curl for an additional 2-3 seconds before letting it set. Follow the same steps with the top portion of your hair and obviously repeat the steps on the other half of your head as well!
  5. When it comes to curling the pieces in the front of your head, I like to take a slightly different approach. Take the top and bottom strands of hair that frame the front of your face and jointly wrap them around the rod. By using the combined top and bottom sections, the front pieces look extra natural and flowy and add a nice touch to the finished look.
  6. Spray your entire head with a light hold hairspray — I suggest using light hold so you can still run your fingers through your hair and shape the pieces. I used Aussie’s Sprunch flexible hold hairspray because it smells unreal and does not add that starchy and hard feeling to your hair.
  7. To add extra volume, flip your hair over and spray from the bottom. However, if you want to keep the curls looking super natural, you can lightly run a comb through the curls before spraying.

Good luck!
