The beach is the go-to spot for hot summer days. Nothing is better than slipping into your bathing suit and relaxing poolside. The only thing that can ruin a perfectly good beach day? Razor burn. Razor burn can be the ultimate kill joy of your next beach trip if you’re not careful. Believe it or not, there are tips and techniques that can make all the difference when shaving your legs, under arms, and bikini area. Follow the below guidelines to ensure you’re taking proper precautions when shaving your sensitive flaunt worthy areas!

  1. Always start with wet skin. We’ve all made that mistake while in a rush or crunched for time… and then paid the price shortly after. Whether it’s a quick shave for a small area or not, you must moisten the area you’re shaving before you begin. Shaving naturally exfoliates, so skipping on the water not only can clog your razor with dead skin, but you can expect extra nicks and razor burn bumps by the time your finished.
  2. Shaving cream is a must! While this is a crucial step while shaving, you don’t have to break the bank with fancy, yummy smelling creams. As long as you find a shaving cream that has moisturizers, you’re good to go. The yummy scent is just an added bonus!
  3. Shop around for your favorite razor. Unlike the shaving cream, the razor needs to be almost perfect for your needs. You can ask friends for recommendations of their favorite razors, but all in all you need to find one that does the trick for you. Some key features to look for in razors are pivoting heads (to get to those tricky spots), lubricated moisture strips, and multiple blades to soften to blow of each stroke.
  4. Switch up your razor on a regular basis. A dull blade can lead to extra nicks and cuts, and even ingrown hairs. Ouch.
  5. Know the area you are shaving, and adjust your technique accordingly. For legs, you’ll want to start at your ankle and shave your way up. Under arms are a little trickier. You’ll need to shave in every direction because the hair grows in numerous directions so be sure to do a once over from top to bottom and side to side. Bikini areas are tricky and you’ll have to use your judgement. Be sure to moisturize this area with plenty of shaving cream, and use short, gentle strokes to avoid irritation.
  6. As mentioned earlier, shaving is a form of exfoliation. But instead of letting the razor do the dirty work, try exfoliating before you shave. That will get rid of any dead skin in the area, help prevent ingrown hairs, and allow you to get a close shave!
  7. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Keeping moisture locked into skin is key. This will prevent irritation, and will soothe the skin before it dries.
Tip for blade use – Rinse the blade after every shave stroke and dip the blade in rubbing alcohol after each use to reduce bacteria!

Now that you know the crucial basic steps on shaving, the odds are in your favor. Although shaving can become a chore in the summer, it will be well worth the time when you’re confidently relaxing on the beach not having to worry about stubble or razor burn! So take your time and remember how delicate your skin is. Don’t let a little (preventable) thing like razor burn stop you from making an appearance at every pool party this summer!
