Inner Rim Eyeliners: Introducing Black, White and Color

Posted on May 26, 2012

Lining the inner rim of your eye instantly defines your eyes – whether you take the subtle or dramatic approach. This post will elaborate on the three ways you can approach the lining of your waterline: with black, with a nude or white, and with a pop of color.

Black

I typically wear black liner on my waterline when I am going out – it’s meant to dramatize your look. It’s important to remember that black liner can be too heavy during the day or disrupt a “fresh-faced” approach – especially if the black harshly overpowers the rest of the tones in your makeup. If you’re choosing to use black liner, be sure the rest of your eye makeup can work with the drama. Define your top lash line as well, whether it be through darker shadows or liner, to balance any harshness the dark liner may create. Similarly, work with the contours of your eyes to create shadows that mimic the dark and defined look – place shadows in your eyelid’s crease with a shade 2 tones darker than your skin tone to achieve a well-balanced look.

White

White eyeliner (or nude eyeliner) does a wonderful job at making your eyes appear whiter and brighter! It’s a great pick-me-up for early mornings and even looks beautiful for any makeup looks you are wearing at night. I highly suggest that you play around with a bright white or nude eyeliner to change up your looks – whether it be during the day to add some wakefulness to your face, or whether it be at night to contrast with any darker colors on your lid. This look works really well with an inner corner highlight and light, natural makeup.

Color

Although I used blue in my picture, this same look can be achieved with any eyeliner color. Simply line your inner rim with a shade that compliments any existing colors in your look. Bright colors are really fun when the rest of your look is natural, but colors such as bronzes or silvers can be used with virtually any existing shadow combination. To really amplify the color, try using the liner right below your lash line as well and then place a matching eye shadow shade over top. This will intensify your color and really add that “pop” to your look! Purples and greens also add a really illuminating touch to your face but experiment until you find the color that works for your look!

Play around with all the options listed above until you find what works for you! Lining your rims can take some getting used to, but it is definitely achievable for any look. Make sure to apply a powder product under your eyes when applying anything to your inner rims in order to avoid smearing – you don’t wanna end up with droopy lines or raccoon eyes. Have fun experimenting & good luck!
