The Waterfall Twist

June 2, 2012

Are you sick of sticking to the same boring hairstyles? During summer, it’s especially tough to find a fun hairdo while beating the heat and humidity. The days of throwing your hair up in a messy twist or bun are behind us. While out in the heat this summer, try sporting one of the hottest hair trends, the waterfall twist. It’s fresh, fun and besides the intricate details this style possesses, it’s pretty simple to pull off.

  1. Brush out all tangles in the hair with a brush to avoid run ins with tangles.
  2. Although this style also works great with wavy hair, try it out first on straight hair for the best results (you can always curl it after you’re finished!).
  3. Start with a chunk about 2 inches thick towards the front of your head and split into two even pieces.
  4. Twist the front section over the back section. Next, grab a thin piece of hair from the top and place between your two sections. Once the new piece is laying over your twist, grab it and place it in your mouth to keep it out of the way.
  5. Twist your two original pieces and grab a new piece of hair again. Just like in the previous step, lay the new piece over your twist between the two original pieces and gather it in your mouth along with the first piece to secure it out of the way.
  6. Repeat the above steps until you have about 5-6 pieces secured in your mouth (or until you like the way it looks).
  7. Once you have your desired amount of hair braided, take a bobby pin and secure the end of your braid.
  8. Voila!

There you have it! With a few practice runs you should be comfortable doing this style rather quickly. If you are having trouble doing it on yourself, grab a friend and practice on them until you’re comfortable with the steps. She’ll get a free hairdo while you get a few dry runs before tackling your own hair. Once you’ve mastered the waterfall twist, you can take it a step further and do a double waterfall twist by following the same steps right underneath your twist for that doubled effect! Don’t get discouraged if this takes you awhile, practice makes perfect but with braids and twists sometimes the messier the better.
