4 Must-Have Lip Shades for Fair Skin

August 19, 2012

Although, I am not quite fair right now (hi, summer, how are you?), I still abide by the fair skin colour rules – don’t go too light, yet don’t go too dark… unless you want to. The fact is very light and very dark colors can wash us out beyond belief, therefore I always stick to four families: Berries, Reds, Deep Pinks and Browns. These add just the perfect hint of colour that will brighten up your complexion. My favorite are:

  1. Revlon’s matte lipstick in Fabulous Fig: Almost a red and almost a brown, but still able to come off a neutral, it is the perfect balance for fair skin. I even double this as a blush. Just dad a bit onto the apples of your cheeks and an instant flush is born.
  2. NYC Color’s Retro Red: For the most daring. This is the perfect 1950s red, a colour every girl should have. It’s blue tones, which may not work for everyone, but it is marvelous if you can.
  3. B.S.N’s Stained Pink: Like Fabulous Fig, except instead of red it is perfectly pink for a sweet everyday look that won’t overpower the rest of your makeup.
  4. NYC Color’s Berry Rich: A bold everyday colour for the fair skinned girl, especially if you have a warm or neutral undertone.

The Splatter Mani

August 13, 2012

Let’s bring out our inner child for just a moment, the one who didn’t colour inside of the lines, and let them run loose on your nails. This tutorial allows you to have some fun, in terms of being a bit more free with the design. This nail tutorial is a bit more difficult because you have to forget everything you’ve learned about painting your nails: keeping everything neat and organized. Here, you must keep everything free and fluid, forgoing the notion of being perfect. I’m going to share some tips on perfecting this imperfect nail art.

  1. Start off with a neutral basecoat. I went with one with a more peachy undertone to play up the pastel colours I chose to splatter with, but a nude would work just as well–disclaimer, I’m keeping this as summer as possible, but deep, dark tones would be excellent for fall/winter.  (more…)

Gradient Glitter Mani

July 30, 2012

The cousin to the ever popular ombre is the ever stylish gradient. If we’re talking math terms here, gradient simply means the variation of space by a quantity represented on a slope. And by slope I totally mean your nails. I’m using glitter to create my gradient, three to be exact, as I encourage you to use at least two or more glitters for this look. Now let’s get into it!

  1. Apply a base colour coat to your nails and allow it to fully dry. Following that by applying a thin line to the tips of your nails with a darker shade of your base coat. Now, don’t go too dark as this colour will peak in through your glitter. This line just adds a bit more depth to the gradient without piling on so much glitter which can get clumpy. (more…)
