The Splatter Mani

August 13, 2012

Let’s bring out our inner child for just a moment, the one who didn’t colour inside of the lines, and let them run loose on your nails. This tutorial allows you to have some fun, in terms of being a bit more free with the design. This nail tutorial is a bit more difficult because you have to forget everything you’ve learned about painting your nails: keeping everything neat and organized. Here, you must keep everything free and fluid, forgoing the notion of being perfect. I’m going to share some tips on perfecting this imperfect nail art.

  1. Start off with a neutral basecoat. I went with one with a more peachy undertone to play up the pastel colours I chose to splatter with, but a nude would work just as well–disclaimer, I’m keeping this as summer as possible, but deep, dark tones would be excellent for fall/winter.
  2. Work on a surface you don’t mind getting dirty (nail polish will end up somewhere else other than your nail!). Here, I have chosen my laptop box, as its sturdy and unimportant.
  3. Dip your nail brush in the polish, but do not remove excess. You want it as drenched as possible for this. Now, quickly move the brush across your nail as if recklessly painting a wall. The stroked should be short and quick without real direction or form to get the real splattered effect.
  4. The result should look like frayed brush strokes across the surface of a wall. Now, you can stop here and just apply your top coat, but I chose another colour to add. I’m stopping at two, but three or more can definitely work for a more chaotic effect.
  5. Use the same method as with your first colour: short and fast strokes across the nail.
  6. Allow to dry and add your top coat. For more pizzazz, I am using a glitter top coat.

Viola! Splattered nails for an unexpected twist.
