Get Big, Loose & Bouncy Waves with Sponge Rollers!

December 3, 2012

Have you ever wished you could score great bouncy waves without heat tools and expensive products? Well, if you’re looking to save time, spare your hair some heat damage, or just simply looking to try something new, sponge rollers are a great option! Not only are they great for your hair and simple to use, but they also produce great results if done right! Follow the steps below to achieve big, loose and bouncy waves without any hot tools!

  1. Step 1 – Brush or comb your hair to remove any and all tangles. Then, apply a lightweight mousse. This will help the curl set in better! Part your hair into equal sections that work best for you. Typically starting at the bottom and working your way up your head works best.
  2. Gather a small section of your first section. (The amount of hair you take depends on the size of rollers you’re using. The smaller the roller, the tighter the curl. For the best results use medium sized rollers. This way, as the day goes by and your waves loosen, you will still have a good amount of body in your hair!) Take a roller in one hand and the section of hair in the other. Starting with the ends of your hair (about an inch up from the tips) place over the roller and begin to roll up your hair. Depending on the length of your hair, you can roll up close to your roots, or stop by your ears.
  3. Secure all of your hair into the rollers. Then, spray the finished rollers with a spray gel or hair spray. If you have time, you can complete the above steps before bed and simply remove the sponge rollers in the morning. If you don’t have the time, you can blow-dry your hair with the rollers in to set the curl quicker (you’ll only need to blow-dry your hair long enough to let the mousse dry).
  4. To remove the rollers, do NOT pull them out of your hair. Instead, carefully unroll them down your hair until they are completely out. Be careful not to grab and tug as this will be damaging to your hair and cause the waves to prematurely fall flat. Once all rollers are out, gently finger comb your hair so that you have loose waves!

Voila! Now that you can produce great waves without any heat, you can save your hair from heat damage as well as save yourself time in the morning! Keep in mind while sponge rollers stand as a great alternative to heat tools, you may need to do a once over with a curling iron to perfect any stray pieces. But all in all, sponge rollers are a great (and affordable) method to achieving big, bouncy waves!
